12/20/2023 0 Comments The silent age critical reviewWhat should have been a read that sucked me in and went quickly, was instead painfully slow. It felt less like I was reading a mental health professional, and more like I was reading an old detective novel. Which is why my review is a dismal 2/5 stars, as it didn’t live up to the hype, and in fact, it horrifies me that so many people enjoyed this novel.Īt first, I found myself perplexed by the tone of the novel. I’ve heard glowing reviews, excitement to read it, and hype up to the max degree. It’s everywhere- on Tiktok, on Instagram, on Facebook- everyone talks about their recent reads and this book always seems to be in that list. This is a read that I was thrilled about. (I choose to read those portions like just a different perspective, and not a journal.) Otherwise, writer, Alex Michaelides, does a splendid job. It takes away from the suspension of disbelief and just looks like the author showing off, when actually, it's way off the mark of reality. The exerpts of Alicia's diary read like a novel, complete with settings, storylines, and dialog. But when I read it, I tjogh, "I should have seen that!" The only exception I take with the otherwise stellar writing is the diary. I'll be honest, and say the plot twist took me cometrly by surprise. As the plot moves along, it feels very much like we are on a path to a destination. Unraveling the truth will reveal not only the mind of the murderer, but the mind of the therapist as well. Theo takes a position at the mental institution that Alicia is housed at, and begins to see her fit therapy in the hopes of getting her to open up. Since then, the brilliant artist has been completely uncommunicative. The last form of communication that Alicia voiced was a painting she created depicting the crime scene. Since her arrest she has not uttered a word, not even in her own defense. Theo is a psychotherapist who has a professional interest in a woman who murdered her husband. The Silent Patient is a great example of a psychological thriller.
